Positive meniscus lenses are designed to minimize spherical aberration and can be used alone to achieve a minimum converging spot, or when combined with another lens to reduce the focal length and thus increase the numerical aperture. When used for converging parallel light, the convex surface of the lens should face towards the light source to minimize spherical aberration.
The center of a negative meniscus lens is thinner than the edge, causing light to diverge, and is designed to minimize spherical aberration. They are often used in conjunction with other lenses to increase the focal length and thus reduce the numerical aperture (NA) of the optical system. When used to emit astigmatism, the concave side should be oriented towards the beam to minimize spherical aberration.
